Paul Antony Young (Luton, 17 gennaio 1956) è un cantante britannico di musica pop rock e, soprattutto, soul, piú correttamente delle varianti occidentali note come white soul e blue-eyed soul, con una spiccata propensione per brani disco ballabili e romantiche ballate sentimentali.

La tonalitá di molti brani è caratterizzata, inoltre, da un uso esteso del falsetto, in particolare all’inizio della carriera solista, nel periodo 1983-1986, particolaritá poi quasi del tutto perduta per un grave problema alle corde vocali.

Young fu anche chitarrista e bassista prima di iniziare la carriera solista nel 1983 ed ha collaborato con i gruppi musicali Kat Kool & The Kool Kats e Streetband: ha inoltre fatto parte dei piú noti Q-Tips, di cui è stato a lungo il cantante solista. Non va confuso con 

l’omonimo cantante Paul Young che, prima della recente morte, è stato un membro dei Sad Café e della band dell’ex Genesis Mike Rutherford, Mike And The Mechanics.

Young è nato a Luton, in Inghilterra. Ha un fratello maggiore, Mark, e una sorella minore, Joanne. Dopo aver frequentato la Ashcroft High School di Luton, inizia a lavorare nella fabbrica della Vauxhall Motors e, nel tempo libero, suona il basso e la chitarra in diversi 

gruppi musicali. La primissima band di cui diventa il cantante solista sono i Kat Kool & The Kool Kats. Negli anni settanta, entra nel gruppo Streetband, con cui ottiene un successo nella Top 20 britannica, con una traccia esilarante, intitolata «Toast», che raggiunge il numero 18 nel 1978.

Nel dicembre del 1979, la Streetband si scioglie e Young forma i Q-Tips, che conquistano una certa fama come live band, ma non ottengono alcun successo di classifica nel Regno Unito, anche se il singolo «Letter Song» diventa un successo minore nell’Europa continentale.

I Q-Tips si separano nel 1982 e Paul Young firma con la CBS come solista. I suoi primi due singoli, «Iron out the Rough Spots» e un remake di «Love of the Common People», non hanno successo, ma il terzo, una cover del classico di Marvin Gaye» intitolato «Wherever I 

Lay My Hat (That’s My Home)», diventa numero 1 in Gran Bretagna, dove resta per tre settimane, nell’estate del 1983: sará il primo di 14 singoli ad entrare nel Top 40 britannico.

Simile successo ottiene l’artista in tutta Europa. Nella madrepatria, il secondo singolo, «Come Back and Stay», raggiunge il numero 4, mentre una ristampa di «Love of the Common People» arriva fino al numero 2. L’album di debutto, No Parlez, ottiene il disco di platino in diversi Paesi.

Paul Young ha incontrato sua moglie, la modella Stacey Smith, sul set della versione britannica del videoclip per «Come Back and Stay», nel 1983. Nel mese di maggio del 2006, la coppia ha annunciato la separazione. I due hanno tre figli: due femmine, Levi (nata nel 

1987) e Layla (nata nell’agosto del 1994), e un maschio, Grady-Cole (nato a gennaio del 1996).

CBS’ main idea was to get a crack team of great R&B musicians behind Paul and cut the album that the Q-Tips ‘should have made’. However, in Paul’s mind he was now free to use some of the modern influences he had been listening to, and mix them with R&B into a new 

sound… So the first recordings were tentative, and all songs had to be agreed by both sides!

The first single released in the UK was ‘Iron Out The Rough Spots’ in November 82 but despite strong radio support it wasn’t a success; initially it was the same for the following release ‘Love Of the Common People’. Success came at last with ‘Wherever I Lay My Hat’, 

which maintained the number 1 spot for the summer of 1983. The album ‘No Parlez’ pushed Paul and The Royal Family (his newly-formed band) to the top of the charts. If the rest of Europe didn’t completely agree with ‘Hat’, that soon changed when ‘Come Back & Stay’ 

was number one in Germany for six weeks, and the rest of Europe followed. (He met his future wife, Stacey Smith whilst making the video of ‘Come Back and Stay’.)

After an exhausting touring schedule around the world (that at one point had Paul doing 13 live shows in 14 days across America), the end of 1984 saw Paul singing the first line of the historical Band Aid record ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’ for Ethiopian Famine Relief.

With the second album, ‘The Secret Of Association’ his status as a world star was confirmed. ‘Every Time You Go Away’ hit number one in America in the summer of 1985, (shortly after his appearance at the historic Live Aid) and in any other unconquered countries too. It was and still is his biggest worldwide hit.
